This is an email that I drafted and sent to myself approximately a year ago through an application called Futureme.org. It appeared in my inbox last Sunday and immediately brought a smile to face.
When I wrote this letter to myself a year ago, I was in a bad place, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I’d tried everything to remain positive. I’d read self-help books, meditated on scriptures, and looked forward to Sunday worship services; and while these things were good for my soul, there were still many dark hours.
The day I penned this note to myself was an all-time low. I felt mistreated at my job; privileges had been taken away; I was transitioned to a different department without a choice and was in an unfavorable environment. And to hear the latest policy update that we were no longer allowed to use our cell phones in the office was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt like I was being treated like a child. You expect me to be a responsible, productive adult, but I can’t have my cell phone on my desk? It didn’t make any sense to me. I felt hopeless and trapped.
Fortunately during this time, I had just begun my journey on planning an escape to change my professional situation. The recent happenings at work encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone and pursue my passion. I wrote the letter as attempt to cheer up; little did I know that I giving life to my future self.
A year later, things have truly changed. I was able to resign from the position that was a depressing and toxic environment. And although I miss my co-workers dearly, there’s no way that I ‘d return. God’s showed me something more promising; a way to fulfill and reach my dreams!
Am I perfect in this new role? Absolutely not! However, I’ve been provided the breathing room to learn new things, practice, and get better. This new journey isn’t easy, but it’s exciting, challenging, and rewarding.
I hope this message reaches someone who currently feels hopeless. Repeat the words that I wrote myself a little over a year ago. You are better than your current situation! A change is around the corner, but you have to take faithful, courageous steps to make it happen.
Is there a passion that you’ve always thought about doing, but haven’t pursed it because you think the timing is right? Stop putting it off! You don’t have to do a 180 over night, but create a plan and take baby steps to reach your goal! You don’t have to be a runner to win this race; if you keep taking steps in the direction of your dreams, you will eventually cross the finish line.
Everyone who pursues their dreams qualifies as a winner! It took me a long time to figure this out. Logically, I knew that success doesn’t come over night; but I always wondered how people reached their ideal end-state. Then once I figured out what my passion and calling were, doing the work and the research to get there flowed naturally. It was easy for me to put in the extra effort to plan and execute, and to watch the dream come true was an amazing experience!
